Fitness Equipment: Pilates Equipment

The word “Pilates” has been quite abused the past few years. It has become an often misused label for any number of supposedly new-age fitness regimens, some of which are completely outside of the original philosophy. Without a policing body, no one can stop the frauds. For those interested in real Pilates, there are some essential items you will need to get started.
The individual objects may go by many names, but they are all the same in the end. A mat, balls, and rings; these are all indispensable tools for building a healthier body.
Find a Sturdy Mat
Unlike yoga mats, Pilates mats need to be thicker and have more cushioning. It should provide a stable and comfortable surface for the necessary movements. If you are serious about Pilates, then you need to get a proper mat as a foundation.
Take the mat on a test run before you buy. Stand on the mat and see if you can feel the floor with your feet; or lie on your back and hug your knees to your chest. In both cases you should only feel cushioning and support. If you can feel the floor, then the mat is too thin and will not last.
You should also get the right sized mat for your frame. Choose something that is wider than your shoulders and at least 12 inches taller than your height. Commercially available mats measure around 72 to 86 by 21 to 39 inches (162 to194 x 47 to 88 cm). Do not forget to get one that is easy to pack and carry.
Have a Real Ball
Traditional exercise balls are big rubber monsters that are sometimes erroneously referred to as medicine balls (which are more like basketballs). A Pilates ball is not necessarily the same thing as either of these.
Unlike exercise balls, which are supposed to be tossed around or rolled; Pilates balls are meant to roll with you. Made of sturdy materials that resist wear and tear, these balls are intended to support you as you lay on top of them on your stomach or spine. They should help you stay stable and feel comfortable.
These balls should also allow you to attach other Pilates paraphernalia. Elastic resistance bands are coiled around and under the ball, so that by lying on your back on top, you can hold onto the ends and workout. If you tried using these bands with a regular ball, you would find it hard to keep a steady base.
You Will Need a Proper Ring
Pretty unique to Pilates are the special resistance rings which are sold under a number of names including magic rings and health rings. Similar in many respects to a resistance band, they have additional attributes for use in Pilates exercises.
These rings usually measure 10″ to 14″ across, and have cushions on either end for gripping. Used in strength training, these rings are pulled or squeezed to induce muscular contraction in the hands and arms and improve circulation.
Sure you can do Pilates with no equipment at all; but to get the most out of this workout, it is best to have the Pilates equipment to rule.
