There are a lot of contact sports that offer the excellent chance to exercise. Tennis, football, and basketball all require inexpensive gear, provide great cardiovascular exercise, and offer the additional benefit of getting fresh air from the outdoors. However, these sports tend to weigh heavily on the joints and other muscle groups. The stress placed on the joint areas in the ankles and the knees may make these high-impact sports not advisable for the elderly or those who’ve had any recent surgical operation.
This is where low-impact exercise equipment comes in.
There is a lot of fitness equipment available that all provide the benefits of building strength, improving coordination and balance, and optimizing the health of the joints. The basic improvement of circulation and respiratory capacity are included in the array of benefits too. These may be achieved from contact sports, as they can be achieved by some low impact exercise activities that will be listed below.
The first one to look into would be rowing machines. These provide a full-body workout, acting on cardiovascular health without having to strain the joints. A rowing machine, instead, specifically targets the improvement of the health of the joints through strengthening support muscles and facilitating the lubrication of the joint areas.
Stationary bicycles and spinners provide the same level of cardiovascular exercise as they develop the gluts, the quadriceps, and the hamstrings. These specific equipment act to stabilize the knees and improve the health of ankle joints.
Stair stepping is also low impact in nature, and act to make firm the knee-stabilizing quadriceps and shape the calves. These are also the least expensive of the home exercise equipment available, even if they do not fall short in giving a full-body cardiovascular workout.
Those who can afford to spend some extra money on exercise equipment should consider a treadmill, which is a low impact tool that simulates the healthful benefits of walking. Walking in real sidewalks and the like may strain the knees and ankles of some of the elderly, and most treadmills offer a more cushioned way of simulating walking. In addition, they are safe and convenient, regardless of whether you want to exercise in the morning, or late in the evening before going to bed.
Elliptical trainers are the latest in home fitness equipment. However, do not chalk it up as just another fat. Elliptical trainers have proven their worth over time among many exercise buffs. These machines help in developing better coordination, strengthening the muscles of the back and the legs, and further improving the ability of the cardiovascular system to work optimally. Elliptical trainers, however, do not pose the same stress on the joints as the outdoor activities that they serve to simulate indoors.
Some weight machines also offer low impact alternatives, all designed to tone, strengthen, and reduce body fat. While there is stress on joints from the use of weight machines, the stress that a person feels in his or her muscles is different from the undesirable strain placed on knees, calves, and quads when you are jogging.
Low impact exercises are excellent ways for those who are recovering from illness and medical conditions, as well as for those who are older, to remain healthy, stay fit, and continue their exercise regimens. With the help of specific pieces of low impact exercise equipment, low impact exercises are definitely not a tall order.
