What You Should Know About Abdominal Muscle Exercise

People exercise for varied reasons, some for health considerations; some to keep fit and have a body-to-die-for. Who doesn’t want to have firm abs and a trim waist? But don’t be swayed by fads and myths. There’s no such thing as spot reduction. What you need is the right abdominal muscle exercise.

When you exercise, you burn calories. Your goal when you exercise is to use up the stored energy that takes up the form of fat deposits in adipose tissue. During exercise, the body initially uses the available energy. After this energy has been depleted, stored energy is burned next.

During exercise you cannot choose which fat deposits to burn; this occurs randomly. So there is no such thing as ’spot reducing.’ But don’t be discouraged; having great-looking abs is still achievable.

When you do abdominal muscle exercise, you tone the muscles of your abdominals. The muscles become strong and defined and helps protect the internal organs. Having toned and strong abdominal muscles gives you a flat and trimmed look.

Abdominal muscles are large muscles. By concentrating on these muscles when you do abdominal exercises, more energy is used up in this area. You will need more energy to be able to do the varied range of motions involved in abdominal exercises. By expending energy, calories are burned which in turns lead to loss of weight and fat minimization.

Don’t believe in products, gadgets, and supplements that claim to cause weight loss. Weight loss is achievable only by exercising and eating proper diet. It takes patience and perseverance to get a well-trimmed body.

Your general appearance is dictated by genetics and age, as well as gender. It is but natural for some people to gather fat around the stomach area. Nature takes its toll on your body also.

It is natural for women in their 40s to have a problem with their mid-section and lower abdomen. Men of the same age group tend to have ‘love handles’ on their sides. All these are inevitable and it naturally comes with aging.

In order to keep the abdominal muscles toned, you have to do the proper exercises. Proper exercise does not necessarily mean more repetitions. It is better to do the correct form. You do not have to do 100 crunches; doing 20 the correct way should suffice. While in the office, do pelvic tilts. Realize that you don’t need to go to the gym to have a good body.

For those who want firm abs, try this. Make sure that proper warm up exercises are done first to avoid injury.

Lie on your back. Cross your arms around your chest and raise your knees. Lift your upper body. Hold this position for 30 seconds. You should feel your abs tightening. This is the effect you want to achieve. To increase degree of difficulty, put your hands at the side of your head. But do not use your hands to lift your head. Let the abdominal muscles do the work. For maximum difficulty put your hands above your head and lift your shoulders and upper body, then hold. Feel your abs tighten and contract.

This abdominal muscle exercise should help you burn energy. Do this on a daily basis for about 10 minutes or 20 repetitions and you’ll notice changes after only a few weeks.
